National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship Program

The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship program supports United States (U.S.) citizens receiving doctoral degrees in science and engineering (S&E) disciplines of military importance.

The broad research area disciplines include, but are not limited to the following: aeronautical and astronautical engineering, Astrodynamics, biomedical engineering, biosciences (includes toxicology); chemical engineering; chemistry; civil engineering; cognitive, neural, and behavioral sciences; computer and computational sciences; electrical engineering; geosciences (includes terrain, water, and air); materials science and engineering; mathematics; mechanical engineering; naval architecture and ocean engineering (includes undersea systems); oceanography (includes ocean acoustics, remote sensing, and marine meteorology); physics (including optics) and space physics. 

The NSDEG Fellowship includes:

  • 3 years of support
  • $40,800 of stipend support per year
  • $1,400 of health insurance support per year
  • Full tuition and fee support

We anticipate that the next NSDEG application period will open in August 2024 and close in October 2024

Eligibility

  • US citizens or nationals are eligible for the NDSEG; dual Citizens are also eligible to apply.
    • The term "nationals" refers to native residents of a possession of the United States such as American Samoa. It does not refer to a citizen of another country who has applied for U.S. citizenship.
    • Persons who hold permanent resident status are not eligible.
  • Students must have a baccalaureate degree
  • Students must be within the first two years of their graduate study (1st-2nd year)
  • NDSEG Fellows must be enrolled full-time and must be pursuing graduate study at a U.S. institution
  • A fellow may not accept simultaneous remuneration from another major fellowship

Application Requirements

  • Please contact the Office of Fellowships and Scientific Writing (OFSW) in the Graduate School to inform the grants administrator of your intent to submit an application
  • Applications must be routed to the OFSW via Weill Research Gateway (WRG) 7 business days before the sponsor deadline for Pre-Review and 2 business days before the sponsor deadline for final review
