Lipedema Foundation - Innovative Research Projects

Deadline Date:
May, 2017

The mission of the Lipedema Foundation is to define, diagnose, and develop treatments for lipedema, a chronic condition that occurs almost exclusively in women and manifests as symmetrical buildup of painful fat and swelling in the limbs. To advance these goals, the foundation supports collaborative research that addresses the basic biology, genetics, and epidemiology of the disease.

To that end, the foundation has issued a Request for Proposals from scientists and clinicians for high-impact and exploratory research with the potential to define, diagnose, and develop treatments for lipedema. The program offers four levels of support, including collaborative research awards, proof-of-concept awards, and postdoctoral and pre-doctoral fellowships.

1) Collaborative Research Award: Designed to foster collaborative research, these awards offer grants of up to $250,000 over two years for projects with a time horizon sufficient to accomplish the proposed research and requiring the involvement of multiple institutions or multidisciplinary researchers. Funds are applicable toward proportional salary, fringe benefits, and research costs.

2) Proof-of-Concept Award: One-year grants of up to $125,000 will be awarded to early-stage and established investigators with research hypotheses with potential relevance to lipedema.

3) Postdoctoral Fellowship: Two-year grants of up to $100,000 will be awarded to postdocs at any stage of their training. Highly qualified applications are eligible for up to $25,000 in independent research funding.

4): Pre-Doctoral Fellowship: Two-year grants of up to $50,000 will be awarded to graduate students at any stage of their training. Highly qualified applications are eligible for up to $10,000 in independent research funding.

Letters of Intent must be received no later than May 15, 2017. Upon review, selected applicants will invited to submit a full proposal.

See the Lipedema Foundation for complete program guidelines and application instructions.
