Instructions for electronic submission: To apply for the MRI Program, please submit the materials requested below to this link no later than October 11, 2021, at 11:59 PM.

Budget:

  • Track 1: Track 1 MRI proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than or equal to $100,000 and less than $1,000,000.
  • Track 2: Track 2 MRI proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than or equal to $1,000,000 up to and including $4,000,000.

Number of Applications: A maximum of 3 applications from WCM (not including Ithaca) with no more than 2 submissions in Track 1 and no more than 1 submission in Track 2.

Program Description:

The Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program serves to increase access to multi-user scientific and engineering instrumentation for research and research training in our Nation's institutions of higher education and not for-profit scientific/engineering research organizations. An MRI award supports the acquisition or development of a multi-user research instrument that is, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs.

MRI provides support to acquire critical research instrumentation without which advances in fundamental science and engineering research may not otherwise occur. MRI also provides support to develop next-generation research instruments that open new opportunities to advance the frontiers in science and engineering research. Additionally, an MRI award is expected to enhance research training of students who will become the next generation of instrument users, designers and builders. An MRI proposal may request up to $4 million for either acquisition or development of a research instrument.

Each performing organization may submit in “Tracks” as defined below:

  • Track 1: Track 1 MRI proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than or equal to $100,0001 and less than $1,000,000.

Eligibility

All faculty whose proposals fit the program priorities are encouraged to apply.

Application Requirements

Cornell is limited to submitting 1 nominee. Due to this limitation an internal selection process will be coordinated. Chairpersons/Division Heads may submit no more than two nominations from their department/division. Note: Chairs/Division Heads submitting more than one nomination must comment on the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two nominees. The same comment should be repeated in both nomination letters. Margins should be at least one inch and font size no less than 11 point.

Required materials for internal submission:

  1. A project title that clearly indicates if it is a development or acquisition proposal;
  2. A 2-3 page description of the research/research training activities and projects to be conducted. Include a section on “Description of the Research Instrument and Needs”. Any references must be included within the page limit.
  3. List by number and type the personnel who will use the instrumentation for research and research training on a regular basis. Include a two-page CV for the PI only.
  4. A paragraph outlining the Management Plan for the Instrument;
  5. One-page budget outline showing major categories and the source of cost-sharing for each year of the project. Meeting the cost-sharing requirement in full is an important part of the review criteria. Indicate the amount and source for all required cost-sharing and whether the commitment is firm or to be confirmed by the source. In addition, include the cost of equipment plus installation, commissioning, and calibration. If needed to better clarify the requested budget items, provide written justification(s) at the bottom of the budget page. If the proposed project will serve the needs of researchers from multiple colleges and other units, proposers are invited to contact either Bob Buhrman or Andy Bass in the Office of the Vice Provost for Research before submitting their proposal to the internal review competition to discuss any possible cost sharing that might be provided by OVPR.
  6. If the proposal is a resubmission, the NSF review panel comments MUST be attached.
  7. A statement outlining ANY other sources of funding to which the project team has applied for the same project.

Submit the items listed above here no later than October 11, 2021, at 11:59 PM in the order listed as one PDF document using the naming convention PI last name-first initial_MRI2022.pdf (see example below).
