Hyundai - Quantum and Quantum Collaborations Awards

The intent of the Hyundai Hope on Wheels Quantum Grant and Quantum Collaboration Awards grants is to support research focused on high risk pediatric cancers with poor outcomes.  The organization’s goals are to support novel therapy and to fund translational research, which increase cure rates and improve the standard of care for children diagnosed with cancer.

The awards are as follows:

  • 2017 Hyundai Quantum Grant (1 nominee per institution): $1,000,000 ($250,000 a year for four years). It will be awarded to a PI whose research, is focused on high risk pediatric cancers.
  • 2017 Hyundai Quantum Collaboration Award (1 nominee per institution): $2,500,000 ($500,000 per year for five years) – These proposals demonstrate a defined collaboration between two or more institutions.

Research proposals will be evaluated based on:

  • Relevance to pediatric cancer
  • Quality of science
  • Innovation
  • Potential for success
  • Potential impact on the field
  • Quality of applicant
  • Quality of institutional environment
  • Demonstrated need for funding

Eligibility

  • The PI/Lead Investigator must have an established record in pediatric cancer research and must be an MD or MD/PhD. PhD co-applicants are eligible, so long as an MD or MD/PhD is a co-PI.
  • The PI/Lead Investigator must commit at least 20% of his/her efforts to the project.
  • The proposal must have demonstrable or potential translational relevance and impact.
  • Research proposals focused on only the following types of pediatric cancer will be considered:
  1. pediatric CNS tumors
  2.  metastatic pediatric solid tumors
  3. pediatric myeloid leukemia’s
  4. pediatric osteosarcomas
  • Research projects to be funded will be those that pursue innovative research that is translational in nature, and that has the potential to impact childhood cancer diagnosis and treatment.
  • Projects that involve immunotherapy or precision oncology/genomics are encouraged for consideration.
  • Clinical research trials, endowments, or facility infrastructure projects are not eligible.
  • Multiple co-PIs from the same institution are permitted to apply for the Quantum Award.
  • Multiple institutions and one identified Lead PI are required for the Quantum Collaboration.

Application Requirements

Weill Cornell Medicine Internal Selection Process for both award mechanisms:

Weill Cornell Medicine is limited to submitting one nominee per category. Due to this limitation an internal selection process will be coordinated. Individuals interested in being considered for one of the limited submission awards should submit the following information:

  1. Summary (in MS Word format) specifying the disease focus and including a description of the hypothesis, aims and goal of the proposed research project (1 page)
  2. Summary (in PDF format) that clearly states which high risk childhood cancer the research is targeting as well as a description of the translational potential and impact of the research on pediatric cancer (1/2 page).
  3. Biosketch in NIH format

For the Quantum Collaboration Award:

  1. Include the nature of the collaboration, separate roles/responsibility for each collaborator, aims of the collaboration, and identification of the “Lead Institution” within the group (1 page).

Investigators must not independently contact the funding agency outside of the limited submission process. Failure to adhere to this policy may jeopardize Weill Cornell’s privilege of participating in subsequent funding cycles. Interested Investigators must submit a pre-proposal for internal review. The Medical College will not support applications that circumvent this process
