The Hertz Fellowship

The Hertz Fellowship seeks to provide the nation’s most promising graduate students in science and technology with five years of funding and the research freedom to pursue innovative ideas with real-world impact.

The Hertz Fellowship award consists of:

  • 5 years of support
  • $34,000/nine-month personal stipend
  • Full tuition equivalent
  • $5,000/year stipend for fellows with dependent children

We anticipate the Hertz Fellowship application will be announced in August 2024, and anticipate that the deadline will be in October 2024.

Eligibility

All eligible applicants must:

  • be college seniors, first-year graduate students, or in a gap year preparing to apply to graduate school;
  • intend to pursue a PhD in the applied physical and biological sciences, mathematics, or engineering;
  • intend to direct their studies toward understanding and solving major, near-term problems facing society; and
  • be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

The Hertz Foundation does not award fellowships to applicants pursuing professional degrees other than a PhD, such as an MD, JD, MBA, DPH, or DVM. However, they will support the PhD portion of an MD/PhD program. MD/PhD students are eligible to apply either the year before they plan to begin your dissertation research, the PhD portion of their program, or during their first year of the PhD portion.

Application Requirements

  • Please contact the Office of Fellowships and Scientific Writing (OFSW) in the Graduate School to inform the grants administrator of your intent to submit an application
  • Applications must be routed to the OFSW via Weill Research Gateway (WRG) 7 business days before the sponsor deadline for Pre-Review and 2 business days before the sponsor deadline for final review
