Number of Applications: 1 application/ funding category (2 applications from WCM; not including Ithaca)

Program Description:

The Feldstein Medical Foundation is a private foundation, created to promote and advance medical research.

The Foundation will be accepting applications in two categories:

  1. Basic science research
  2. Translational research/ early clinical research/ medical education research

Translational research will include T1 (developing treatments and interventions in early clinical trials), T2 (testing the efficacy of interventions), T3 (dissemination and implementation research for system-wide change), T4 (dissemination and implementation research for population change).

Approximately 20% of the applications with equal funding in each of the two categories.

Grants will be made in varied areas of medical research, including:

  • Translation/implementation studies
  • Medical Education Research
  • Basic science
  • Early clinical research

Evaluation Criteria:

  1. Overall scientific excellence. Are the conceptual framework, specific aims, study design, methodology and data analysis and interpretation of high scientific quality? Are the investigators experts in the appropriate field? Are there resources available to make the project successful?
  2. Relevance to FMF mission. How will this proposal meet the goals and objectives of FMF as set forth in its mission statement, above.
  3. Significance. Does this study address an important problem? If the aims are achieved, will scientific knowledge, health or healthcare practice, be advanced?
  4. Innovation. Does the proposal investigate an area not previously studied? Does the investigator intend to use existing tools or knowledge in an original manner?
  5. Future Funding. If the current proposal is successful how likely is it to lead to future funding?
  6. Support Requested. Is the budget well justified in relation to the objectives and proposed activities?

See the Foundation website for details.

Eligibility

  • Have a doctoral degree or equivalent in a field related to medicine, nursing, public health, health care or biomedical sciences.
  • Have an assistant professor level appointment
  • Demonstrate the research skills, knowledge and resources to carry out the research successfully.
  • The FMF foundation is particularly focused on funding:

  1. Promising junior investigators (assistant professor level) with a history of some prior funding
  2. New or innovative research
  3. Research in areas where FMF funding will have the maximum beneficial impact on health or healthcare practice for significant populations
  4. Research that may lead to significant advancements in scientific knowledge

Application Requirements

WCM is limited to submitting 2 nominees (one nominee per each funding category). Due to this limitation an internal selection process will be coordinated. Chairpersons/Institute Directors/Division Heads may submit no more than two nominations from their Department/Institute Directors/Division.

Note: Chairs/Division Heads submitting more than one nomination must comment on the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two nominees. Send the candidates' comparison summary by email to researchdean@med.cornell.edu by the internal deadline indicated above.

For the internal selection, please submit the following items in the order listed in one single PDF file using the appropriate naming convention:

Margins should be at least one inch and font size no less than 11 points.

  1. 1-to-2-page letter of nomination detailing why the candidate should be considered.
  2. Research statement (2 pages max. not including references) by the candidate.  This must comprise the following sections: specific aims (including clear measurable objectives), background and significance, preliminary studies (if warranted), research design and methods, a timeline (the project must be completed within 12 months). The 2 pages must include figures, but references can be submitted separately.
  3. Brief budget outline.
  4. NIH-style Biosketch. Please include past, current, and pending support.

Submit the items listed above here no later than February 5, 2024, at 11:59 PM in the order listed as one PDF document using the naming convention PI last name-first initial_FMF2024.pdf (see example below).
