Program description
The Schmidt Science Fellows program provides the world’s best emerging scientists with new skills and perspectives to develop novel solutions to society’s challenges, become scientific and societal thought leaders, and accelerate ground-breaking discoveries. The Fellowship enables the world’s best-emerging scientists to pivot from their PhD discipline and pursue their goals through bold interdisciplinary research.
Fellows pursue a postdoctoral placement at a world-class research environment that provides optimal support to develop their interdisciplinary science. They join the vibrant, lifelong community at the heart of Schmidt Science Fellows. Fellows benefit from one-to-one mentoring with the experienced and internationally accomplished senior interdisciplinary scientists, and accelerate their personal and professional development through the Science Leadership Program. Fellows will build the skills, experience, and networks necessary to become interdisciplinary science leaders. Schmidt Sciences is committed to equality of opportunity for all candidates.
As Cornell University and Weill Cornell Medicine can collectively nominate 7 students for this competition, we are having an internal competition for prospective candidates. Please see details below.

The Schmidt Science Fellows program is looking for:
- Brilliant minds in natural sciences, math, engineering, and computing with a commitment to interdisciplinary science.
- Curious and creative scientists who are interested in broadening their horizons by pivoting away from their PhD research area and pursuing a challenging and rewarding period of study in an alternative research discipline with world-leading scientists.
- Academically excellent, risk-positive, early-career researchers who can demonstrate a commitment to ambitious, high-impact science.
- Future leaders with the potential and character to lead teams and unlock transformative discoveries in the future.
- Talented individuals from a wide range of scientific disciplines who are motivated to increase the potential for interdisciplinary collaboration.

About the Disciplinary Pivot
*The Interdisciplinary Pivot** The shift in research focus or interdisciplinary pivot is central to the program's mission. The pivot should enable a Fellow to achieve a scientific goal that is not possible while continuing their current course, allowing them to overcome a scientific challenge using different approaches or perspectives. Schmidt is not interested in funding an extension of current or previous work, or incremental steps from graduate research.
- Proposals requiring candidates to immerse themselves fully in a new discipline from their current expertise and to address different or broader questions than those posed during their PhD are aligned most closely with our Program and will be valued most highly.
- Proposals with less ambitious changes in discipline and application are valued less.
- Proposals in sub-disciplines closely related to the PhD are not acceptable, even if there is a large change in the application area.
- We do not allow proposals that represent an incremental or logical progression from your PhD or those which attempt to cover multiple disciplines where only a superficial understanding of each new area is likely to be gained.
- Proposed pivots must be to the natural sciences (Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Sciences), Engineering, Mathematics, or Computing or any sub-disciplines of these subjects.
- Pivots to the Social Sciences are outside the scope of the Schmidt Science Fellowship. Applications proposing a pivot into the Social Sciences are not eligible.
- Visit the program resources webpage here for additional guidance.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Schmidt Science Fellows Program, you must:
- Studying for a PhD in natural sciences (Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Physics), Engineering, Mathematics, Computing – or any of the sub-disciplines, at one of the nominating partner institutions.
- Individuals on clinical track MD-PhD or Veterinary-PhD programs are not eligible.
- Expected to complete all requirements for the conferral of their PhD, including a successful defense, between May 15, 2025, and June 30, 2026.
- Able to start their Fellowship in July 2026 or October 2026, available from April 2026 to July 2027 to attend virtual onboarding activities, and from October 2026 to attend in-person convenings.
- In "good standing" at their institution. Note: Prior to nomination, WCM is required by the sponsor to conduct administrative checks for all nominees to be assured they are in good standing with the university. "Good standing" is taken to mean that the nominees have no past or current sanctions on their record and are not subject to any current disciplinary investigations (relating to either their academic performance or conduct).
- Formally nominated by their institution.
Please note: Application and selection process and delivery of Fellowship programming will be in English.
Application Requirements
Internal Application Components
A letter of nomination (2-page limit) from the candidate's Advisor or Director of Graduate Studies describing their strengths and abilities, particularly with respect to their extraordinary achievement, scientific curiosity, collaborative spirit, character and leadership, global ambition for social good, and future potential.
- Note: No more than two nominations from a program may be submitted to this internal competition. Writers submitting more than one nomination must comment on the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two nominees. The same comment should be repeated in both letters and located after the signature block.
- describes why you are interested in the Schmidt Science Fellows and what you hope to achieve from the program (this should focus on your personal motivation and interests, not focus only on research)
- describes your PhD research, and
- describes your future research plans, including the innovation, vision for societal/global impact, and how it is a genuine and ambitious change of focus from your PhD studies, with a clear and positive rationale for the change in direction you are proposing.
- Tips for writing proposals for internal competitions: The internal proposal should written to be accessible to a very broad scientific audience. Members of Cornell's internal review committee will have differing levels of familiarity with your area of research. Do not be overly technical or include a lot of "jargon." Define significant terms. Proofread and check for typos.
Follow the internal selection guidelines carefully, including adherence to page limits. Proposals not following the guidelines provided above and/or not responsive to the interests of the sponsor may be rejected from the internal competition without review. If you have questions about this competition, contact Dr. Anastasia Efthymiou at ane4008@med.cornell.edu.
