Budget: $250k-$350k for 2 years.

Application limit: 1 (not shared with Ithaca)

Program Description: The 1923 Fund was established by WCM alumnus Dr. David Cofrin (Class of ’47) and the Cofrin family, and is administered by the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. This two-year philanthropic award supports innovative biomedical research with a dual focus:

1. Advancing scientific discovery aimed at alleviating human suffering
2. Promoting disease prevention and improving standards of medical care

Applicants must demonstrate a clear connection between their research and a meaningful community benefit, particularly through pioneering, cutting-edge work in any medical discipline. The Fund has a preference for clinical research with specific community impacts.

  • Faculty members at all levels

Application Requirements

WCM is limited to submitting 1 nominee. Due to this limitation, an internal selection process will be coordinated. Chairpersons/Division Heads/Institute and Center Directors may submit no more than one nomination from their department/division/institute or center.

Margins should be at least one inch and font size not less than 12 pt.

Nomination packets must include:

  1. 30-lines scientific abstract explaining the qualifications of the applicant and fit of the project for this funding mechanism
  2. Letter from the Department Chairperson/Division Head/Institute or Center Director detailing why the candidate should be considered (1-2 pages)
  3. Lay Summary (one paragraph)
  4. Description of the candidate’s proposed research (2 pages) that includes background information, specific aims, impact, and significance of the proposed research. References are in addition to the 2-page limit
  5. Candidate’s Biosketch 
  6. Brief justification of the budget

Submit the items listed above here no later than November 24, 2025, at 11:59 PM in the order listed as one PDF document using the naming convention PI last name-first initial_1923Fund2025.pdf (see example below).
