Description of Program:

The James Hilton Manning and Emma Austin Manning Foundation Research Scholar Award was established to provide endowed funding to an outstanding early career faculty member at WCM. There is no specific research field associated with this RSA. Income from the RSA endowment will allow talented junior investigators the support needed to pursue their groundbreaking ideas more thoroughly and collect relevant data in preparation for grant submission and review as they build and advance their independent research programs.

Number of awards: 1

Level of support: ~$50,000 /year for 3 years; with an opportunity for 3 additional years contingent on satisfactory progress.

Eligibility

New Eligibility Criteria for RSAs (Please read the below closely as our eligibility requirements have been updated):

  • Must be an Early-Stage Investigator (based on NIH ESI criteria):
    • Must have obtained a terminal research degree or completed post-graduate clinical training within the past 10 years (whichever date is later).
    • Must not have received a previous R01 grant
  • Must hold an Assistant or Associate Professor position with an independent research program in basic/translational research. Clinical research programs are not eligible for Research Scholar Awards.
  • Candidates are ineligible to hold more than one RSA simultaneously or sequentially

Application Requirements

Nomination materials:

Internal nomination limit: Departments without divisions can submit up to 1 nomination. Departments with divisions may submit up to 1 nomination per division. Institutes and centers can submit up to 1 nomination per institute or center.

Nomination must include the following materials to be complete:

  • Nomination letter from the Department Chair/Division Head/Institute Director (1-2 pages). The letter should describe the candidate's research and scholarly achievements and discuss why they are deserving of this award. The letter must also include a description of the resources (laboratory space, start-up funds) available to the candidate. Note: If nominated from a division, the nomination letter should be approved and co-signed by the Department Chair and Division Chief.
  • Statement from the nominee describing their research background, current research efforts, and future goals. This should also include a statement about how this award will help them to achieve their future research objectives. (2 pages)
  • Updated Biosketch
