The purpose of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The NSF GRFP program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing fulltime research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education. This fellowship provides three years of financial support, which includes $37,000 stipend support and $12,000 tuition and fee support.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the NSF GRFP, you must:
- be a US citizen, US national, or permanent resident
- intend to pursue a research-based Master’s or Ph.D. program in a GRFP-supported field
- MD/PhD students are ineligibile
- research must be in basic science; translational and disease-focused research is not funded by the NSF
- be enrolled in an eligible program at an accredited United States graduate institution, with a US campus, by fall following selection
- be at an early stage in your graduate career
- have completed no more than one academic year of full-time graduate study (or the equivalent)
- "Completion" referes to participation in mutliple academic years
- The NSF considers the summer a separate academic year
- If a PhD student begins their PhD studies in the summer, they are only eilgibile during their first year
- Graduate students are limited to only one application to the GRFP, submitted either in the first year or in the second year of graduate school
Application Requirements
The NSF GRFP application is submitted through the NSF Fastlane platform. Applications include:
- Personal Statement (3 pages)
- Research Statement (2 pages)
Please contact the Office of Fellowships and Scientific Writing (OFSW) in the Graduates School before submitting your application. Applications must be routed to the OFSW via Weill Research Gateway (WRG) 7 business days before the sponsor deadline for Pre-Review and 2 business days before the sponsor deadline for final review.
