Budget: $40,000 per year for five years

Number of Applications: 2 awards are typically given every year to multiple NYC-based biomedical institutions, including WCM.

Program Description:

“The aim of this program is to support talented biomedical scientists committed to careers in academic research, and in particular those who exhibit an exceptional potential for high quality productive research”.

Eligibility

  • Pre-tenured biomedical scientist at early career stage (Assistant/Associate Professor level)
  • Candidates should be approximately ten years past receipt of their MD/PhD/MD-PhD degree and 5-6 years after starting their first faculty appointment
  • They should be actively involved in and show exceptional potential for high-quality, productive biomedical research. Studies may be either clinical science or laboratory science
  • Candidates should demonstrate solid independent research programs through grants and independent publications
  • Candidates are expected to have an independent laboratory and be in a tenure-track position. Preference for candidates who started and developed their research program at the host institution 
  • Candidates should not have administrative or service responsibilities to the extent that could detract from their research activities
  • NIH Research Career Development awardees are eligible to apply
  • Applicants must have full-time status in Weill Cornell Medical College or the Cornell University Graduate School of Medical Sciences.

Application Requirements

Weill Cornell Medicine is limited to submitting 2 nominees. Due to this limitation an internal selection process will be coordinated. Chairpersons/Division Heads may submit no more than two nominations from their department/division. Note: Chairs/Division Heads submitting more than one nomination must comment on the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two nominees. The same comment should be repeated in both nomination letters.

  • Letter from the Department Chairperson detailing why the candidate should be considered (1-2 pages)
  • Description of the candidate’s proposed research (2 pages) that includes background information, goals, procedures and significance of the proposed research.  
  • Candidate’s Biosketch
  • Brief justification of the budget.

Do I need to include a budget justification in my application?

A brief justification of the budget is encouraged

How long should the research statement be?

The research statement should be about 2-3 pages long. If your application is selected, the research statement for the final submission can be based on the one submitted for the internal submission, with the addition of an Equipment & Resources section.

If my application is selected, do I need a WRG record?

The Hirschl awards are processed through the Development Office so a WRG record is not needed.

Is additional current funding allowed?

Yes. The Hirschl program allows multiple current sources of funding.
