Program Details:
The Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Foundation has invited Weill Cornell Medicine to nominate one investigator for the 2025 Mallinckrodt Grants program.
The funds are designed to provide faculty members who hold M.D. and/or Ph.D. degrees, and who are in the first to fourth year of a tenure-track position, with support to move the project forward to the point where R01 or other independent funding can be obtained. Applicants with current R01 funding should not apply.
The grants are intended to support early-stage investigators engaged in biomedical research that has the potential to significantly advance the understanding, diagnosis, or treatment of disease.

Eligibility
- Applicants should be in the first to fourth year of their tenure track faculty position and not have current R01 funding.
- Applicants can still have R35 funding.
- Applicants should hold MD and/or PhD degrees.
Application Requirements
WCM is limited to submitting one nomination. Due to this limit an internal selection process will be conducted. Chairpersons/Division Chiefs may submit no more than two nominations from their department/division.
Note: Chairs/Division Chiefs submitting more than one nomination must comment on the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two nominees. Please send the comparative statement to researchdean@med.cornell.edu by June 2, 2025.
Internal submissions should contain the following information:
- Letter of nomination form the candidate’s Department Chair/Division Chief (1-2 pages)
- The letter must represent the support of the institution: Include details addressing the level of support the institution will provide E.g., institutional support in the form of core facilities access, financial support, or space.
- Letter must also address the promise of the investigator for securing R01-level extramural funding.
- Lay Summary (1 page): Applicants should bear in mind that the Mallinckrodt Board includes non- scientist members, making this summary of particular importance. The summary should include the project’s title.
- Research plan describing the scope and significance of the proposed research (2 pages, including references). Proposals must contain an adequately detailed description of the project to be clearly understandable by the scientific members of the Research Advisory Committee. Proposals should be conducive to R01 or other independent equivalent extramural funding.
- NIH Biosketch.
- Budget outline - 3 years for grant applications. Excel format - 1 page - with totals. Budget justification on separate page.
