High Performance Computing Core

The High-Performance Computing Core (HPCC) powers data-driven research at Weill Cornell Medicine by providing the computational scale and expertise required for today’s most demanding scientific challenges. From processing terabytes of sequencing data to training advanced machine learning models, we enable researchers to work at the pace and scale that modern discovery demands.

As research methodologies evolve toward data-intensive applications—including genomic sequencing, artificial intelligence, and high-resolution molecular imaging—the need for scalable computing has become a necessity. The HPCC ensures our investigators have the tools to move beyond the constraints of standard hardware.

Our Mission

To accelerate scientific breakthroughs by equipping researchers with the high-performance resources, secure infrastructure, and technical expertise needed to solve complex biological and translational problems at scale.

What We Provide

We maintain a robust computing ecosystem designed for security, reliability, and speed. Our services bridge the gap between local data analysis and large-scale computation through:

  • On-Premise Infrastructure: Management of a 4,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art data center in the Belfer Research Building (BRB), providing high-density local compute and storage for WCM’s premier research initiatives.

  • Large-Scale Storage Access: Leverage over 26 PB of high-performance storage across Lustre, GPFS, and NFS systems for genomics, imaging, simulation, and other large datasets.
  • A Global Research Bridge: A deep, integrated collaboration with WCM-Qatar in Doha. This partnership extends our high-performance computing services across continents, enabling a unified approach to global health research and international scientific cooperation.

  • Public Cloud Resources: Expert provisioning and oversight of AWS and GCP environments, allowing labs to leverage specialized cloud tools and elastic burst capacity alongside our on-premise resources.

  • Global Data Mobility: High-bandwidth connectivity to Internet2 and multiple Globus endpoints, facilitating the secure and rapid transfer of massive datasets with academic and industry partners worldwide.

  • Technical Partnership & Consultation: Direct collaboration with labs to mentor researchers through the transition from local analysis to cluster-based computing, optimizing scientific workflows for peak efficiency.
