On January 14th, Weill Cornell Medicine’s Core Laboratories Center held its inaugural WCM Cores Day in the Griffis Faculty Club, showcasing the institution’s research core facilities to more than 240 attendees from across WCM, including faculty, staff, postdocs, and students. Each of the 22 core facility tables was led by its respective Core Director, who detailed the range of available technologies and services. Throughout the event, participants explored a range of topics—including advanced instrumentation, research methodologies, and day-to-day operational procedures by visiting each core table and attending the scheduled presentations.
The event was attended by Dr. Robert A. Harrington, the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean of Weill Cornell Medicine, who emphasized the importance of events like Cores Day in fostering a collaborative environment. He remarked that the presentations and discussions exemplified the institution’s commitment to supporting cutting-edge research. “By bringing different specialties together,” he added, “faculty and trainees can more effectively leverage the powerful tools and expertise housed in WCM’s core facilities.”
The open format of the event encouraged researchers to engage in direct dialogue with core facility staff and ask questions ultimately giving them a clearer sense of how centralized services can benefit both individual projects and broader collaborative studies. Cathy Garzio, Executive Vice Provost and Chief Operating Officer, hoped to see more events like this in the future, noting the great enthusiasm at the event and how inspiring it was to see so many scientists at all levels of the organization come together.
Participant feedback highlighted that bringing all core resources together made it especially valuable to engage directly with each Core Director and gain clarity on specialized service offerings. Building on this positive reception, the Core Laboratories Center leadership plans to organize additional events that encourage open communication about core services, further strengthening the research network at Weill Cornell Medicine.
