Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation - Research Grant

External Deadline:
Aug 2021

The Meso Foundation (formerly known as MARF) is the non-profit dedicated to ending the suffering caused by mesothelioma. We are the international collaboration of patients and families, physicians, advocates, and researchers dedicated to eradicating the life-ending and vicious effects of mesothelioma. We believe in a cure for meso. In addition to raising awareness of the disease, advocating on behalf of the meso community, educating those newly diagnosed and providing support to those affected, we fund the most promising meso research projects through rigorous peer-review. To date we have received 525 proposals since 2000 of which 99 projects from six different countries were awarded over 9.4 million dollars.

The Meso Foundation’s research grant program offers grants for two years up to $50,000 per year. Eligible projects may relate to benchwork, translational or clinical research that is not presently funded and may be conducted through any not-for-profit academic, medical or research institution. We encourage all levels and degrees of scientists to apply.

Encouraged projects include, but are not limited to:
1. Strategies for early detection and prevention of mesothelioma;
2. Definition of targetable differences between normal and transformed mesothelium and development of novel strategies for treatment taking advantage of these targets;
3. Determination of clinical/molecular determinants for prognosis
4. Therapeutic intervention, including but not limited to:

  1. Immune Response Targeted Therapy

  2. Novel chemotherapeutic compounds

  3. Novel radiation or surgical techniques

Applications should be submitted through proposalCENTRALYou will find the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation listed with the instructions and the application documents required. Applications are due no later than August 5, 2016.

Applications will be reviewed by the Meso Foundation’s Science Advisory Board (SAB) comprised of doctors and researchers who work around the world within the mesothelioma field. These members will review and score the proposals submitted in accordance with the National Institutes of Health peer review criteria and scoring procedures. The highest scoring projects will be recommended to the Foundation’s board of directors for funding. Based on the funding available, awards will be granted. Final award decisions will be made in December and all applicants will be notified of the outcome.

If awarded a grant application will agree to a terms and conditions letter that will outline deadlines of progress reports and disposition of funds reports. These reports must show that the investigator is following the specific aims laid out in the grant proposal and keeping within the terms of their grant agreement. These reports will be reviewed by the chairperson of the SAB and the executive director before subsequent installments are issued. Through the course of the grant no funds will be allocated to institutional direct costs. Grant recipients are also expected to attend scientific community events sponsored by the Meso Foundation where a presentation and/or poster should be presented referencing the progress of the project.

Those wishing to submit an application in response to this call should do so through proposalCENTRALwhere you will find instructions, templates and forms needed. Applications will be accepted until August 5, 2017 for this round of funding.
